For my thesis, I unearthed a story I had never heard in detail or truly understood. I was afraid to ask questions until now. My thesis is the personal story of my parents’ courageous journey of escaping Vietnam and enduring a multitude of obstacles. Over a five day period, my parents’ traveled on seven different vessels in the South China Sea before reaching an island called Pulau Bidong, off the coast of Malaysia. They lived in Malaysia as refugees for one year before settling in America.

My parents’ story is a unique experience that represents the 2 million Vietnamese who fled their homes between 1975 and 1985. Today, there are an estimated 43.3 million forcibly displaced people worldwide — the highest number since the mid-1990s.

  • Dynobit
A typeface inspired from Dynamic Road Signs that many of us see driving down backroads to congested interstates. These signs have no hierarchy and I believe another level of visual hierarchy could help inform the viewer driving by. I created this typeface under the guidance of Tal Leming at Maryland Institute College of Art. More weights and styles are under construction.

  • Honey Hopper the Bully Stopper
I did not mold the shape of the frog. The original frog was a technology frog. It was covered in computer chips and wires. The frog was donated to a local elementary school. The children were frightened by the tech frog so the school stripped it and hid the frog for the past seven years. They asked for help and I volunteered. The frog stands roughly nine feet high. The children now call it 'Honey Hopper the Bully Stopper' in support of the bullying campaign.
